Manchester United and Aston Villa meet yet again, this time in the Final of the Carling Cup. United are the current cup holders, while Villa last won the trophy in 1996.
United and Villa have met twice this season, and the team from Birmingham have taken four points out of a possible six against the Premier League Champions which includes their 1-0 win at Old Trafford. However, that was the first game in 26 attempts that Villa took maximum points against United.
Rio Ferdinand is out for United, having suffered a recurrence of his back injury. Ryan Giggs is still recovering from the broken arm he sustained a couple weeks ago, while Nani is suspended. Also added to the absentee list is midfielder Anderson, who will miss the entire season. For Villa, captain Stylian Petrov could return to the side after having seemingly recovered from a virus, while Brad Friedel could return in goal in place of Brad Guzan.
Given United's good record in cup finals, I am tipping them to retain the Carling Cup. I predict a scoreline of 2-1.
