Game 35 Preview - Manchester City vs Manchester United (Apr 17, 2010)

Manchester City host local rivals United in what is probably the most important game for both teams this season. A City win would further boost their chances of a Champions League spot and at the same time, all but end United's bid for a fourth successive league title. Should United win, they would be just a point behind leaders Chelsea, who have a tricky away fixture at White Hart Lane. Spurs got a fantastic result against Arsenal last week and Chelsea looked shaky against Bolton, therefore, it is all to play for, for United. A Chelsea win would not necessarily clinch them the title but will be a huge leap for them. Therefore, it is imperative that United put up a performance and get the three points here; such is the significance of this game. Both these teams have met thrice already this season, with United edging out City 2-1 in the head-to-head.

Man City have been one of the success stories this season, and almost expectedly so. Having spent big on players like Emmanuel Adebayor and former United favorite Carlos Tevez, City are just 5 games away from a Champions League position. City's form has been great of late, having scored an incredible 14 goals in their previous three games. Also, they have suffered just a single home defeat all season. However, this weekend City will have to do without defender Joleon Lescott, while Wayne Bridge is also doubtful. Former Arsenal captain and United nemesis Patrick Vieira is out as well.

In stark contrast, United have been pretty poor this month. Having suffered defeats against Chelsea and Bayern Munich (on aggregate), they drew away at Blackburn last time out. The good news for them is that talisman Wayne Rooney should return to the side and could start up front, however, Rio Ferdinand is a doubt with a groin injury.

My heart says it's going to be a United win; my head says a draw. Since this game is more important for United than for City, I have a feeling that the visitors will be up for the challenge in maintaining the pressure on Chelsea. I think the key for United is Rooney. If he is fit and plays, United could win. So I am going to make that assumption and go for a United win by 3 goals to 2.
